The anti-ag

It seems the ag industry can’t do anything right.  We either get too much gov’t help, too much from the market place, plant too many GMO crops, use too many pesticides, grow too much, create too much demand and I could go on and on.

With the complaints coming from so many directions, I’m thinking we may have things about right.  What could be any other reason for such a wide range of complaints directed at one very important industry? The producers of the safest, most abundant food supply in the world seem to keep taking the heat.

Why are so many complaining?  Is it fear? A movement? Jealousy? Anxiety from the world unrest? Maybe, all of the above?

One thing I noticed about many of the complainers is they don’t post a picture of themselves with the complaint they post.  That leads to more questions.  Are they ashamed of what they write? Is this group of anti-ag people really not that big and they are actually the same people posting over and over with different names?

We may never know or even care to know the answers to these questions but the thing I am proud of is the fact I am part of the agriculture community.  The same group that produces the safest, most abundant food in the world.  I am also proud to say most of us also put our face next to our word.  We take pride in telling the truth about our industry.

    I hear you, Randy. Several years ago, back in the age of LDP’s and higher DP and counter cyclicals, everyone was whining about what the farmer got through the gov’t (even though we paid with our taxes as well) Cheap food prices but still had to complain, probably more out of envy than anything else (I dare them to go through the sacrificial periods like the 80’s where you wonder if you will make it through for another year). Now that the market is providing our income, they complain (was going to use another word) how prices are too high, even though our subsidies are little to nothing in comparison. Can’t win for loosing.

  2. As a former aggie, I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to see the industry avoid confronting these idiots all along. Say, until the beef industry took on Oprah for slandering meat way back when. I’ve always thought there should be a concerted effort to counter every nonsensical theory that comes down the pike with a solid scientific rebuttal. But it seemed to me they thought they were taking the high road… Which gets you nowhere when dealing with morons.

  3. People in urban, sub-urban, and sadly some folks in the rural communities don’t know how, where, what their food comes from. When you can rent “documentaries” like Food Inc.which blankets Ag as corporate factory evil, vile, destroyers of the land and murderers of life, it makes it tough to turn around and image and idea that ALL Ag is the same.
    I constantly go to Omaha to visit friends to be bombarded by questions on the evils of Ag. and the practices of growers. Ok, so I’m the token farm boy in the city, but the damage has been done to the reputation. Information booths at the local fair and farm shows aren’t going to educate those folks who are going through an awakening of the food origins. We need to educate them, the way they are misinformed. Ag needs to come to the city and reconnect the disconnect.
